Questions and answers

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?: Add the PDF, set the position, start number and style, check the preview and create the copy. It runs in your browser, and the file stays on your device.
Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?: Yes. Set the start number, for example 3 for a report with a separate cover and contents page.
Will it remove numbers that are already in the PDF?: No. Numbering adds visible text. It does not remove existing numbers and does not change the PDF page labels.
Can the numbers cover my content?: They can. The overlay may cover content on the page, so check the first and last pages in the preview.
I need legal document numbers such as DOC-000001. Is this the right tool?: Use Bates Numbering for a prefix, suffix, start number and digit width.

If it did not work

A number overlaps text, a table or a footer: Choose another position in the preview and check the pages again. Add Header and Footer is an option when the footer area is used.
It rejects the page: Pages smaller than 72 pt and unsupported rotations are rejected. Use Rotate PDF or Change PDF Page Size on the original, then add the numbers.
Old numbers still show next to the new ones: Number a copy of the file that has no printed numbers.
A viewer shows different page numbers from the printed ones: That can happen, for example when you start at 3.
The sequence is wrong after you add pages: Numbering follows the current pages. Merge, reorder or delete pages first, then add the numbers to the final file.
