A practical guide

Check the outer and inner sheet pairs.

  1. Choose a PDF of no more than 40 pages and select left or right binding.
  2. Choose landscape A4 or Letter paper and the output margin.
  3. Create the imposition and check the outer and inner page pairs before a test print.

Try this example

Use an eight-page guide with left binding and landscape A4. Inspect the first and last imposed sheets to confirm the expected pairings.

Before

  • Pages 1–8

After

  • 8 | 1
  • 2 | 7
  • 6 | 3
  • 4 | 5
Input and expected output for this task. Illustrative example.

Before you start: This creates print imposition, not a page-size booklet editor. Blank slots pad to a multiple of four; there is no creep compensation. Test duplex short-edge printing first.

Questions and answers

How do I print a PDF as a booklet?
Add a PDF, pick left or right binding, landscape A4 or Letter and the margin, then create the booklet PDF. Print it double-sided, one PDF page per sheet side, at actual size.
Why are there blank pages at the end?
A folded sheet holds four pages, so the tool pads the document with blank slots to a multiple of four.
What does an eight-page booklet look like?
With left binding the sheet sides are 8|1, 2|7, 6|3 and 4|5.
Which paper sizes can I use?
Landscape A4 or Letter. You pick the margin when you create the booklet.
Does it compensate for thick paper?
No. There is no creep compensation. Fold a test copy before you print the full run.

If it did not work

The file is refused
A booklet can take up to 40 pages. Split a longer PDF into parts and make one booklet from each part.
The pages come out in the wrong order after folding
The duplex direction may be wrong. Try short-edge duplex printing, then check the first and last sheet sides on a folded test copy.
The printed pages look scrambled
The printer's booklet mode is probably on. Turn it off, because the PDF is already arranged.
The text looks smaller than expected
Print at actual size and check the margin you chose.
The last pages are empty
Those are the blank slots. If you want to fill them, add a useful last page, such as notes or contacts.
