A practical guide

See the size before and after.

  1. Choose one PDF of up to 60 MiB and 200 pages.
  2. Keep Standard, or pick Strong for a smaller file with softer photos.
  3. Compress, compare the original and new size, then check photos at the size you will view them.

Before you start: Only embedded photos and scans are recompressed, as JPEG; text, fonts, forms and layout are kept. Documents that are mostly text may not get smaller, and then no copy is made. Signed, certified, encrypted or incrementally updated PDFs are refused. Keep the original.

Limits and important details

One PDF, up to 60 MiB and 200 pages. Only embedded photos and scans are recompressed as JPEG; masked or transparent images, small images and unusual colour formats are left unchanged. Text, fonts, forms and layout are kept. If the copy would not be smaller, no file is made. Signed, certified, encrypted or incrementally updated PDFs are refused.

Example

Compress the three-page photo sample with Standard: it should shrink by more than half and keep its three pages of text. Strong makes it smaller still with softer photos. A text-only PDF may show that no smaller copy was made.
