A practical guide

Select the pages-per-sheet layout.

  1. Choose the PDF and select 2, 4, 6 or 9 pages per sheet.
  2. Choose A4 or Letter, orientation and output margin.
  3. Create the layout and inspect page order, legibility and margins.

Try this example

Choose six pages per sheet for a compact overview of a 12-page packet. Check the row sequence and whether the reduced text remains usable.

Before

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3
  • 4
  • 5
  • 6

After

  • 1 | 2
  • 3 | 4
  • 5 | 6
Input and expected output for this task. Illustrative example.

Before you start: Pages are fitted proportionally and may leave margins. A compact sheet can make small text hard to read; inspect at the intended viewing or print size.

Questions and answers

In what order are the pages placed?
Row by row, from left to right, then the next row. Pages 1 and 2 go on the first row, pages 3 and 4 on the second.
Does the text stay sharp?
Yes. Pages are scaled as vector content, so text stays text and you can still select and search it. It is smaller, though, so look at it at the size you will print or read.
How is this different from a booklet?
A booklet reorders the pages so that the folded sheets read like a small book when printed double-sided. This tool keeps the reading order and only fits several pages on one sheet.
Do links still work?
Yes, links are kept. For comments and form fields, you choose whether to imprint them into the page or remove them.

If it did not work

It says the file is too big
The limit for this layout is 10 MB and 200 source pages, and the result can be up to 40 MB. Split the PDF and lay out each part.
A signed PDF or an XFA form is refused
The layout would break the signature or the form, so these files are not accepted.
The text is too small to read
Choose fewer pages per sheet (2 or 4) or landscape orientation.
The bookmarks are gone
Document metadata and bookmarks are not kept in the new layout.
